GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 31st July, 1920.
Gw 63791
With reference to Mr. Severn's despatch No.308 of the 25th September, 1919, I have the honour to forward a return of smuggled opium which has been seized in the Colony between the 1st January and the 20th July, 1920.
As will be seen, considerably over a ton
2.
of Amoy opium has been confiscated during this period, the largest seizure being made in a Japanese motor-boat manned by a Japanese crew. Owing to the great increase in produc- tion in China the price at Amoy is about $2 a tael for this opium, which is slightly inferior in quality to the Persian opium which is sold by the Hongkong Monopoly at g12 a tael.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
77.2. Statts
Governor,&c.

VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,
